Albert Ernest Buice

June 14, 1923 — July 26, 2015

The Cochran Funeral Home & Crematory of Blairsville announces the death of Albert Ernest Buice of Brasstown Manor in Hiawassee, Georgia, passed away Sunday, July 26, at the age of 92. Born June 14, 1923, in Brookhaven, Georgia, to Willie and Ruby Buice, he is survived by his daughter Joyce Larrabee (John), son Ed (Tricia), daughter-in-law Rita Buice, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Edith Elizabeth Smith Buice and son Albert Buice Junior, who both died in October, 2007. Albert was also preceded in death by his second wife Juanita Benton Buice, in June, 2014. Her daughter and son-in-law Sheryl and Charlie Fletcher remain close members of the extended family.

In early adulthood Albert held a wide range of jobs, including delivering ice and milk to Atlanta area homes in the 1940's. He owned what in those days was called "a filling station" for a while, and studied to become a private pilot.
He served in the US Navy in World War II, working primarily as a welder in shipyards and in the Korean War working on aircraft radios and instrumentation. During his time in the Navy he was stationed in Baltimore, Maryland; Pensacola, Florida; and San Bruno, California,

In 1948 Albert got a job on the loading dock at the Decatur, Georgia Veterans Administration Hospital. Thirty years later, he retired from the Veterans Administration, now known as the US Department of Veterans Affairs, after advancing to a position as a senior auditor at VA Headquarters in Washington DC. Along the way, career moves took him and his family to VA facilities in Dublin, Georgia; Sepulveda, California; Denver, Colorado; Castle Point, New York and Danville, Illinois.

Although painfully shy as a child, Albert was an active member of the Gideons International for 52 years and became comfortable speaking in churches, handing out New Testaments to strangers on the street and placing Bibles in hotels and motels. His joy was telling people about Jesus. After retiring from Federal service Albert and Edith traveled to dozens of countries handing out Scriptures, showing gospel films, helping to build churches and doing various other mission works.

The Buice family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Albert's memory to the Gideons International, PO Box 140800, Nashville, Tennessee 37214-0800 or online at: https://www.gideons.org/HowYouCanHelp/generaldonations.aspx

A service of remembrance will be held Sunday, August 2 at McConnell Memorial Baptist Church in Hiawassee, Georgia, at 3:00pm. Interment will be held at a later date.

Arrangements entrusted to the care of Cochran Funeral Home & Crematory of Blairsville.
