Alvin Bernard Harper

Alvin Bernard Harper died February 27, 2012 in Ellijay at his residence in Cameron Hall. Mr. Harper was born on January 30, 1916 in McCaysville, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his parents Thomas Lafayette Harper and Hattie Jane McDaniel Harper, brother Theodore Harper, and sister Bernice Harper Spikes.
Mr. Harper joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in 1934 at the age of 18, working on various projects in the North Georgia Mountains for a time. He went to work for the Tennessee Copper Company in 1937, which was later bought by Cities Service Company and eventually by Occidental Petroleum. He retired from Occidental in 1978 as a Supervisor in the water purification plant, ending a 41 year career.
Mr. Harper's strong faith all of his adult life led him to be in active service in every church of which he was a member. He served First Baptist Church of Epworth as a Trustee, Deacon, and Sunday School teacher for several decades.
Mr. Harper is survived by his wife of 72 years, Ethel Cowart Harper, and three sons, Thomas Glenn Harper of Jasper, James Alvin Harper and his wife Virginia of Seaside, California, and Richard David Harper of Reading, Pennsylvania. He is also survived by grandchildren, Jeffrey Harper and his wife Karen of Gautier, Mississippi, Amy von Borstel and her husband Michael of Woodstock, Sabrina Eads of Loganville, and Christina Harper of Alameda,California; great grandchildren, Christa von Borstel, Thomas von Borstel, Ryan Harper and his wife Bria, Rachel Harper, Jessica Harper, Katelyn Harper, Chloe Eads, Malacio Backhaus; and great-great grandson, Christian Harper. He is also survived by niece Susan Harper, nephew Don Harper, and great nephew Brian Buxton.
Family will receive friends Thursday, March 1 from 5 to 8 at Finch Cochran Funeral Home in McCaysville. The funeral service celebrating Mr. Harper's life and his Lord will be Friday, March 2, 1:00pm at First Baptist Church of Epworth with Dr. Tom Jordan officiating and Rev.Doug Simonds providing special music.
