Mrs. Edna Brackett Gray, age 92, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Saturday morning, September 10, 2016 in Stonehenge Assisted Living in Blairsville.
Mrs. Gray was born in the Hemptown section of Fannin County, Georgia, on December 26, 1923, a daughter of the late Howard Brackett and the late Effie (Weaver) Brackett. Edna was a reserved, quiet-natured person, a Christian, fully devoted to her church. She had served as church secretary and treasurer at Liberty Hill Methodist Church. Edna's Dried Apple Stack Cake was a special delight - her claim to fame! Edna's faith grew stronger as she lived through many hard years being a caregiver during the declining health of her parents, and both of her husbands. Besides her parents, Edna was preceded in death by her twin brother, Edward William Brackett; her first husband, Howell McVey, who died in 1971; and husband, James Monroe Gray, who died in 1998, and was a former Sheriff of Union County, Georgia.
Left behind to treasure her memory are her loving family members: cousin and devoted caregiver, Charlene Brackett Grizzle; sisters-in-law, Leona Brackett, Thelma M. Hardin, Josephine M. Jones, and Helen M. Jones; brother-in-law, Jimmy McVey; great nephew, Bruce (Mazie) Gray; her Liberty Hill United Methodist Church family; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services for Mrs. Gray were held on Monday, September 12, 2016, at 2:00 p.m., in the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville, with Rev. Charles Black officiating. Special music was presented by The Norton Family. Selected to serve as pallbearers were the following gentlemen: John Brackett, Larry Brackett, Sam Nichols, Bruce Gray, Joe Gray, and Tim Grizzle. Burial was in Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation at the funeral home began on Sunday evening, September 11, 2016, between the hours of 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions be made to Liberty Hill United Methodist Church.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville. Please share your condolences and fond memories with Mrs. Gray's family on our website, www.cochranfuneralhomes.com.
