The Cochran Funeral Home & Crematory of Blairsville announces Funeral Services for Mr. Hubert William Handy of Young Harris who passed away at his Home on Friday morning, July 25, 2014.

Mr. Handy was born May 9, 1923 in Towns County, Georgia to the late Loyd & Ethel (Hooper) Handy. He grew into a man as any country boy in these parts would. At the age of 18, Mr. Handy enlisted as a medic in the Army and quickly found himself serving in the Jungles of Burma during WWII. Known as the "best shot" in his platoon, he used his knowledge of hunting to slay a vicious tiger which had been stalking his unit. Upon his return home from the war, He fell deeply in love with Oleta during a blind date set up by mutual friends. Just 2 months later, She agreed to become his "pretty bride". The two were inseparable and together raised a wonderful family. Oleta was supportive in all his endeavors and accomplishments. Mr. Handy earned dual degrees in Forestry and Game Management from the University of Georgia. His career and passion was the conservation and management of Georgia's Natural Resources. A true outdoorsman, He was instrumental in bringing the deer, turkey and fish populations back to the area to be enjoyed by the generations to come.

Mr. Handy was a visionary and always aspired to create an enduring legacy. He established his home place just a short distance from where he spent his childhood. Family oriented; His days where spent teaching his children and grandchildren about the beauty of nature and all it's wildlife and plants. An excellent grandfather, he encouraged their interests and character development. He enjoyed restoring Model A cars, raising gardens full of tomatoes, okra & beans and managing his pond.

He will be warmly remembered by all who knew him, but especially missed by his family: loving wife of 67 years, Oleta Hall Handy; daughters & sons-in-law, Susan & Russ Cain, Sarah & Michael Henderson, Sheila & Stan Mays; and sister-in-law, Dorothy Handy. 2 grandchildren, Joey Mays & his wife Pearl, and Andy Mays also share in his legacy along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Geneva Kuykendall and brother, Paris Handy.
