Jasper Lee Harrell,

Jasper Lee Harrell Jr., 87, of 180 Woodrow Wilson Way, Rome, GA, passed away Monday morning, September 19, 2011, at his residence.

Mr. Harrell was born February 18, 1924, the son of Jasper Lee Harrell and Grace Donehoo Harrell in Baltimore, Maryland. Upon completion of high school, he joined the 16th Signal Corp Battalion of the 6th Army. He served in Australia, British New Guinea, and Dutch New Guinea. He was a part of the invasion of Leyte in the Philippines, the invasion of Luzon at Lingai Bay, and spent six weeks in Japan after the war ended as part of the transition force.

Following his tour in the army he enrolled in Georgia Institute of Technology and graduated in 1950 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. After graduation he begin work with Georgia Power Company and served in many locations and positions until coming to Rome in 1969 as Operations Manager. He retired as Division Manager in 1988.

While in Rome he served the community in many ways including a term as President of The United Way, President of the Northwest Georgia Chamber of the Ga. Society of Professional Engineers, and chairman of a citizens review panel of the Juvenile Court. He was also a Rotarian, a member of the steering committee of the Crisis Pregnancy Center, a charter board member of Youth for Christ of Rome and elder for First Presbyterian Church, Rome, where he sang in the choir. He was a faithful volunteer for the soup kitchen and medical clinics each week.

In 1951 he married Betty Jean Dyer of Villa Rica and faithfully loved her for 56 years until her death in 2007. He is survived by his two sons, six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Mike Harrell and his wife Beth Ware Harrell live in Chattanooga, TN and have three children, Abby Harrell Bryant of Chattanooga, married to Tim Bryant. Abby and Tim have one son, Luke Bryant. Ivey Harrell Semke of Oldsmar Florida is married to Lt. Rand Semke and they have one daughter Layla Semke. Graham Harrell of Siloam Springs, Arkansas is married to Erin Hoch Harrell. Mark Harrell and his wife Sherry live in Norcross GA and have three children, Elisabeth, Gracie, and Christopher.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 21, 2011, at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Jeff Chadwick and Dr. James Van Dyke officiating. Interment will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the New Liberty Church Cemetery in Blairsville.

The family will receive friends at Daniel's Funeral Home, Rome, on Tuesday, September 20, 2011, from 5 until 7 p.m.
