Cochran Funeral Home and Crematory of Blairsville announces for the Parrott Funeral Home of Fairburn, GA funeral services for Jesse Albert Thornton, age 85, who passed away on October 4, 2016. He was the son of the late William Hillyer Young Thornton and Elizabeth Fletcher Thornton of Union City, GA. He was the sixth of nine children.
Jesse worked for the State of Georgia for 33 years, retiring in 1983.
He is survived by his wife, Joan Hunter Thornton. They would have celebrated their 59th anniversary on October 6, 2016. During his long illness, he was blessed to be cared for by Joan, a retired Fulton County public health nurse. He died peacefully with Joan by his side.
In addition to Joan, he is survived by his daughters, Nancy Thornton Hallman of Fort Worth, TX and Julia Thornton Wilson and her husband Britt of Carrollton, GA. Highlights of his life were his grandchildren, Joann Hallman Pederson and her husband Pete; Emma Thornton; Hunter Callahan Wilson and his wife Katie; Collin Thornton Wilson and his fiancée Brooke; Reed Davis Wilson and Blake Goodwyn Wilson. He is also survived by a beloved great granddaughter, Mary Elizabeth Pederson.
He was a longtime member of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Fairburn, GA. He had many hobbies and interests, including woodworking, gardening, clock collecting, steam engines and tractors. His daughters thought he could make or do anything, and his grandchildren thought the same. All are grateful for his legacy of kindness, wisdom and good humor.
The family will receive friends and family on Thursday, October 6, 2016 from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Parrott Funeral Home, Fairburn, GA. Funeral services will take place at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Fairburn, GA on Friday, October 7, 2016 at 11 o'clock. Burial will be held in the family plot at Choestoe Baptist Church in Blairsville, GA at 12 o'clock on Saturday, October 8, 2016. In lieu of flowers those desiring may make donations to Southwest Christian Care, 7225 Lester Rd., Union City, GA 30291 or Bethlehem Baptist Church, 5485 Bethlehem Rd., Fairburn, GA 30213.
