Richard A. Maggs, a thirteen year resident of Martin's Creek, passed away on January 12, after being lovingly cared for by the staff at the nursing home at Murphy Medical Center. He previously resided in Wall Township, New Jersey. Richard was born on July 31, 1925 in Niagara Falls, New York, to Maud and George W. Maggs.

He was predeceased by his wife of sixty three years, Dorothy, in 2008 and two brothers; Russell and Gerald. He is survived by two sons, Dr. Richard A. Maggs, Jr. and his wife Betty Ann of Milford, Pennsylvania, and Keith A. Maggs and his wife Mary of Wall Township, New Jersey, two grandchildren; Eileen Maggs of Long Branch, New Jersey and Andrew Maggs of Wall Township, New Jersey, two sisters; Virginia Doyle of Sanborn, New York and Aleith Travers of Ransomville, New York, two brothers; Philip Maggs and his wife, Diane of Westminster, California, and Will Maggs and his wife Judy of Youngstown, New York, and sister in law, Joyce Maggs of Eden, New York.

Services will be held for Richard on Monday, January 17, 2011 at 10:30am with Reverend, Eddis Dockey officiating in the Cochran Funeral Home Chapel of Murphy. His visitation will take place for family and friends on Sunday, January 16, 2011 from 4:00pm-8:00pm at the Cochran Funeral Home of Murphy, NC.

Richard was a proud Marine Corps veteran of World War II, a past Cub Master of Pack 65 in Farmingdale, New Jersey, a former member of the board of trustees of the Calvary Baptist Church in Belmar, New Jersey, and a past deacon of the First Baptist Church in Matawan, New Jersey. Prior to his wife's extended illness, he was an attendee at the Boiling Springs Baptist Church.

Richard was employed by X.S. Smith, Inc. of Eatontown, New Jersey, from the end of World War II until his retirement in 1987. He was secretary/treasurer of X.S. Smith, Inc., president of its subsidiary, Structures Unlimited of Saratoga, Florida.

Richard was a devoted husband and father. He and his wife were inseparable, and he was devastated by her death. He will be greatly missed by his family and his Russian Blue cat- Mickey.
