Robert Harold Hampton, age 78 of Murphy, passed away Thursday, July 16 at his home following a period of declining health. He was born in Cherokee County, April 29, 1931 to the late Oscar and Emma Hampton. He attended New Martin Creek Baptist Church, retired from Contel Telephone Company with over 30 years of service, served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. Commander of the American Legion Post # 96 and later served as Vice Commander for a number of years. Hampton was a member of the DAV, Chapter 73, a NRA member and former member of the Masons. He served on the Veterans Honor Guard in Cherokee County and was instrumental in helping to get the veteran organizations building in Cherokee Co. Robert was also a musician, playing with several different local groups.
Survivors include: wife, Mennice Beaver Hampton, son & daughter-in-law, Glenn & Sharon Hampton, son, Buddy Hampton, son & daughter-in-law, Shaun & Melissa Hampton, step-son and wife, David & Cindy Powell, step-son and wife, Brian & Cheri Powell, step-daughter and husband, Susan & Tom Pope, brother, Troy Hampton, grandchildren; Seth Hampton, Kia Hampton, Tasha Hampton, Matthew Hampton, William Hampton, Dylaina Hampton, Ryan Torres, Jonathan Hampton, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Sunday July 19, 2009 at 4:00 PM from the Chapel with the Reverend Paul Ray Morgan and Reverend Ray Wilson officiating. Interment will follow in Snow Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday, July 19, 2009 from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations may be made to the Local Veterans Honor Guard.
