Roy E. Cardell, age 74, of Blairsville, Georgia died November, 12, 2009, after an extended battle with cancer.
Roy was born May 6, 1935, in Austell, Georgia. His parents were the late C. Roy (C.R.) and Thelma Cardell. Roy, and his wife of 54 years, Beverly Glore Cardell, married May 12, 1955, maintained a family home for many years in Mableton, Georgia. Roy retired as Director of Tooling from Lockheed Martin. For most of his career he worked at the Marietta, GA plant, but also had assignments in Burbank, CA; Meridian, MS; Brindisi, Italy; Chinhae, South Korea, Fort Worth, TX, Prestbury, England, and Huntsville, AL. He and his wife, Beverly traveled extensively and took great joy in their three children and seven grandchildren. An engineer at heart, Roy was happiest when there was a problem to solve and something to build.
He was a member of at First United Methodist Church (FUMC) of Union County and was active in many volunteer activities including Jaycees (past president) and local politics; and since retirement split time between his grandchildren, his church, ICL at Young Harris, Oasis program at FUMC, and the Mountain High Hikers.
Roy is survived by his wife, Beverly, children, Mackey McNeill and spouse Barry Schlimme of Independence, Kentucky, Jeff and Noelle Cardell of Rochester, New York, Jenny and Charles Whitener of Lookout Mountain, Georgia; Grandchildren, Sarah Mohr, Annemarie Cardell, Amanda Cardell, Alyse Cardell, Andrew Cardell, Chase Whitener, and Katie Whitener; sister in law, Janet Cardell, sister, Martha Walston, brother in law Bill Walston, sister Alice Coussons.
Roy is predeceased by his brother Alfred Cardell.
The Memorial Service will be led by Pastor Ben Lewis and will be held at 11AM, Monday, November 16, 2009 at First United Methodist Church of Union County, 859 Highway 515, Blairsville, Georgia. Visitation will be held on Sunday evening, from 4 to 8PM, November 15, 2009, at Cochran Funeral Home, 32 Hospital Street, Blairsville, Georgia, 30514.
To celebrate Roy?s life the family will be developing a meditation garden at his church for all to enjoy. The family requests donations in lieu of flowers to: First United Methodist Church of Union County, 859 Highway 515, Blairsville, Georgia, 30512. Attn: The Roy Cardell Memorial Fund.
