Sharon Louella (Harvey) Nowland

December 5, 1951 — February 1, 2015

The Cochran Funeral Home of Hiawassee announces Memorial Services for Mrs. Sharon Louella (Harvey) Nowland, age 63, of Hiawassee who passed away on Sunday, February 1, 2015.

Sharon was born in 1951 in Atlanta, Ga to Thomas and Elsie Harvey. Her father served in WWII and soon after graduating high school, Sharon entered the US Navy. She was stationed in Long Beach, CA were she worked as a triage nurse's aid on a Naval Hospital ship. After being honorably discharged from service in 1974, she was married in California and gave birth to two sons in 1975 & 1976. Eventually, she moved closer to her family in GA and followed her parents to Hiawassee, where she periodically helped out at their campground. She remarried and settled in Hiawassee and became a homemaker.

In last few years of her life, her favorite role was as a grandmother. When she was babysitting, she frequently entertained the kids with made-up games, practical jokes and allowing her kitchen to be turned into the "Chopped" kitchen for cooking contests with the kids. Her spirit was forever young and children love being around her. Sharon volunteered to help run errands and other things for disabled tenants of the apartment complex. Here, she developed a close network of friends who treated her like a daughter. She loved "Dancing With The Stars". "General Hospital" and Rod Stewart. She loved crossword puzzles. She loved corny jokes. She loved to cook for her family. Finally, she moved to the campground as a transition for a planned permanent move to Cocoa Beach, FL. or possibly back to her favorite place, California. She was able to visit the beach one last time in the week before she passed and was hopeful that she could be there forever.

She will be warmly remembered by all who knew her, but especially missed by her family: sons, Wyatt & Matt Espalin; daughter-in-law Jill Espalin, 3 grandchildren: Ian Thompson, Daylen Espalin & Evie Espalin. 3 beloved nieces: Michelle Harvey, Pamela McFall & Peyton Turk and nephew Hank Harvey. Many great-nieces & nephews and many friends and acquaintances.

Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 7, 2015 from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 1:30 P.M. until the service begins. In Lieu of Flowers, Memorial Donations may be made to help Disabled Veterans of America online at www.dav.org.

Arrangements entrusted to the care of Cochran Funeral Home of Hiawassee.
