David Franklin Collie, 83, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Friday, April 7th, 2023, at Cypress Pond Senior Care in Tifton, GA. David was born September 25, 1939, in Ruffin, NC to John Siddle and Nellie Dix Collie. David was a resident of Blairsville, Georgia for over 20 years.
After high school, David served in the U.S. Navy for 3 years reaching the rank of E5/Petty Officer 2nd Class, as a Communication Technician 2. He received an Honorable Discharge in September of 1960. He then went to college and was a 1964 graduate of Virginia Polytechnical Institute (VA Tech) in Blacksburg, VA.
After graduation, he went to work for the U.S. Public Health Service/CDC and served over 31 years with the Federal Government. He retired in 1996 as a GS-15. After retirement, he operated his own handyman business doing work in and around Dekalb County, GA and the North GA Mountains.
David was a deacon at First Baptist Church of Blairsville for 13 years and served as a deacon at churches across the country for 28 years. He taught Sunday School for over 41 years. He was a member of Sons of the Revolutionary War and Sons of Confederate Veterans.
David was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Janice Collie; brother, John S. Collie, Jr; sister, Peggy Collie West; father, John Siddle Collie, Sr; mother, Nellie Dix Collie.
He is survived by his son James D. (Cindy) Collie; son Christopher D. (Mary Ann) Collie; brother Bob R. Collie; grandchildren Kayla Collie Simmons, Laurel Collie Smith, Avery J. Collie, Jabril Collie, and Christopher Brown; and 13 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to First Baptist Church Blairsville’s youth program.
Funeral Services are scheduled for Thursday, April 14th at 1:00 pm at The Rock Chapel of First Baptist Church of Blairsville with Dr. Fred Lodge officiating. Family viewing will be Thursday, April 14th, from 12:00 – 12:30. The family will receive friends from 12:30 pm -1:00 pm. Interment will be at Georgia National Cemetery on Wednesday, April 19th at 1:00pm.
